For the past couple of weeks, Casey and I have been looking into activities and things that Austin can do to relieve some energy. One of Austin's major struggles continues to be self-stimulus behavior or "stimming." It is basically a obsessive-compulsive urge to fulfill something through one's own senses. Austin get overstimulated he tends to be VERY hyperactive and "spastic" to the point that he is (literally) bouncing off the walls. He will throw his body around onto anything (ie- the floor, couch, bed, walls, etc) and he can't stop himself. Sometimes it looks like he has no control of his own body. So today we went out and bought him a trampoline to help with controlling some of the urges into an organized activity...#1 it is safer and #2 it is more appropriate behavior.
We know that Austin's stimming derives from some underlying biomedical issue we have yet to pinpoint, so he will will get better once we are able to find the root cause and treat it but he will probably always struggle from some type of compulsiveness so this will help him to find more appropriate ways for dealing with them. :)
Our next tool we hope to find is something to help Austin with his visual stimming. TO BE CONTINUED...
I think he likes it! :)
