Guess What??? We're Pet Owners!

Well...fish owners, really. :)

Casey and I decided a while ago that we really wanted to get Austin his own fish tank. Every time we have gone to an aquarium, Austin seems to be not only fascinated by all the different fish and sea life but by the movement of the water and the way that it reflects light. So we spent months researching different tanks and which one would be the best fit for Austin.

We ended up deciding on a Biorb Life 30. Cool thing about this company is that they partnered up with Autism Speaks to create a tank that helps autistic children fulfill their visual stimulation/sensory with there bubble filtration system. It looks similar to a bubble tube that is commonly used in occupational therapy, ABA therapy, etc. The tank also has an LED light option it can switch to that is very cool and sensory fulfilling.

I knew nothing about fish tanks prior to this. Thank goodness for the very helpful guy at Pet Smart! Once the tank came by FedEx, we had to set it up and treat the water so it has the right level of bacteria in it. This took about 1 week. It was pretty cool actually...we filled the tank and then added chemicals the first day and then a different set the next day. During that week the water became really cloudy and then cleared up to perfectly, crystal clear. Then we set up the heater b/c we wanted tropical fish since they are so colorful.

We learned from the Mr. Pet Smart that with small fish you can determine that a tank can handle about 1 fish per gallon of water in tank. So we opted for 7 colorful fish. Mostly guppies and one glow fish. Good starter fish! :)

I'm super excited for Austin!
